Tyre Age – How Old Are My Tyres?

For years, people have relied on tread depth to determine when to replace a tire. If the tread passes the ” penny test , ” they assume the tire still has life, regardless of how old it is, which can be a fatal mistake. Old tires are dangerous, regardless of tread depth. While there’s no federally sanctioned safety guidance on when a tire is too old to be safe, many carmakers recommend replacement at six years from the date of manufacture.

When he was driving two weeks later, the tread suddenly separated from the tire.

Date of purchase is either documented by new vehicle registration (where the tyres were fitted on a NZ new vehicle as original equipment) or original tyre sales.

If you’ve ever wondered how old your tires are, it’s an easy bit of information to find out. Tires actually have a “born-on” date, and it’s listed right on the tire itself. Almost everything you need to know about your tires is molded into the sidewall and coded according to federal requirements, including the specific week and year when a tire was made. To read the date on a tire, look near the edge of the rim for a series of characters starting with the letters DOT.

This code can tell you the manufacturer of the tire and the factory where it was made, as well as provide lot-specific information used for tracking in case of a recall. The last four digits of this code tell you when your tire was manufactured. The first two numbers indicate what week of the year it was made out of 52 weeks per year , and the second two numbers represent the year.

Here at Michelin we are constantly asked: ‘when should I change my tyres?’. As a precaution, if the tyres have not been replaced 10 years from their date of.

When it comes to buying tyres, most customers will undoubtedly have heard that there is an expiry date — from the date of manufacture — to look out for when making a purchase. However, how true is this notion? On the sidewalls of each tyre, there is a stamp known as the DOT Department of Transportation code, which includes a four-digit figure. This figure is the manufacture date.

Should you find a tyre with a DOT code that has just three digits, the tyre is made before the year avoid these. Referring to our earlier example, this would mean they were made two years ago, around the end of September According to the United States Rubber Manufacturers Association RMA , there is currently no standard to determine the expiry date of tyres, as the damage done to each tyre is based on a number of factors like temperature, load, tyre pressure used, the velocity at which the vehicle is travelling and others.

Be that as it may, the British Rubber Manufacturers Association BRMA does recommend that new tyres that have not been used for six years or more should not be fitted to vehicles, and that all tyres exceeding 10 years from the date of manufacture must be replaced or disposed of. Adding on to this, Michelin states that tyres are not like fruits that go bad if left untouched.

How to Tell When a Motorcycle Tire Was Made: Deciphering Tire Codes

Automobile tires are described by an alphanumeric tire code in American English and Canadian English or tyre code in British English , Australian English and others , which is generally molded or moulded into the sidewall of the tire. This code specifies the dimensions of the tire, and some of its key limitations, such as load-bearing ability, and maximum speed.

Sometimes the inner sidewall contains information not included on the outer sidewall, and vice versa.

As far back as we can remember, we’ve always been led to believe that tires, whether used or unused, have an expiry date. It’s about 6 years.

To help identify the age of your tyres, each one is imprinted with a coded date which tells you when that tyre was manufactured.

The four-digit tyre age code is usually located in a window on the tyre sidewall. The first two digits of the code represent the week of production during the year from 1 to 52 while the second two digits represent the year of manufacture. In this example, the manufacture date code is – where 47 denotes the week of manufacture and 18 represents the year, meaning the tyre manufacture date was the 47th week of If your tyres are printed with only a 3-digit number, it means your tyres were manufactured before and should be replaced asap.

There is no definitive tyre age limit as to when you should replace your tyres but once your tyres reach 7- 10 years old, you should keep a close eye on their condition and consider replacing them. Tyre ageing is commonly identified by small cracks, known as crazing, which appear in the tyre sidewall. This is brought about when UV light oxidises the rubber causing it to dry out. While tyres contain anti-oxidising chemicals which significantly slow down the rate of ageing, this wax-like substance is only released when the tyre is in motion.

Therefore, if the tyre is not used frequently or is stored away ineffectively, they will age more quickly rendering them unroadworthy when returned to use. Low mileage, older cars tend to be most at risk from premature ageing – as drivers assume the tyres are still in good condition if they have plenty of tread.

Michelin’s new Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System Uptis does away with one of the defining aspects of tires as we’ve known them for more than years: the air inside. Unlike past attempts at airless tires, Uptis functions the way other modern tires do and, Michelin claims, will provide a similar driving experience. Unveiled at the company’s sustainable-mobility-focused Movin’On Summit in Montreal today, Uptis is a tire without a traditional sidewall that carries its load by the top thanks to a new resin-embedded fiberglass material that Michelin was granted over 50 patents for.

Uptis is not Michelin’s first airless concept tire. It builds on the Vision concept that was introduced at the summit meeting. That concept had four main components: it was airless, connected, could be 3D printed or have a rechargeable tread pattern , and was percent sustainable. Uptis tackles the first of those problems as part of what Roget called a “step by step” process to the tire of the future. Michelin will test Uptis in the real world with General Motors.

GM will outfit a fleet of its Chevrolet Bolt EV hatchbacks with the concept tires for road tests in Michigan later this year. Both companies said Uptis-style tires could be found on production passenger vehicles as early as The Uptis concept tires have a maximum speed of miles per hour and a max load of pounds. Different versions with different specs and driving characteristics will be possible, Roget said.

That’s the kind of work Michelin will do with GM to figure out the right structure and number of spokes, which type of rubber to put on the outside, and how to embed the fiberglass in the tire depending on the vehicle application.

Michelin launches campaign to bust tire age myth

Because safety is our top priority, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Department of Transportation want to make sure you have the tools to avoid being in vehicle crashes. The only thing between you and the road are your tires. TireWise provides drivers with information about buying tires, tire maintenance and labeling, aging, fuel efficiency, and tire retailers.

According to Michelin, the fabrication date of the tire doesn’t affect its performance. Unlike medicines or food, such as a banana, you don’t need.

Tires are one of the most essential components of your car. On this note, it is only normal to be careful when buying them. This has been the way for some, but Michelin finds this a serious concern. As explained by Michelin, tires begin their aging process as soon as they are mounted on your wheels. Even when a car is at rest, tires suffer from pressure stresses — what more when the car begins to move fort and stop?

Furthermore, temperature is also a factor affecting tire status.
